War had once been thought of as something men travelled abroad to engage in. 80 years ago today in the late afternoon of 7th September 1940, that view was changed abruptly for Londoners when the Luftwaffe began bombing the capital for the first time, killing 400 on the first day of a campaign that killed 100 times that number over the next 8 months in London and in Britain’s other major cities. This picture shows the kind of destruction that became routine on the home front within a few weeks.⁠ Total war was not a new concept in 1940, but the massive scale and intensity of the Blitz on London was unprecedented. War was now experienced directly by the whole population in their own homes. The fears had been for an even worse catastrophe – much higher casualty rates, poison gas attacks, germ warfare, a mental health crisis and social chaos were all considered real threats. In the event none of these materialized, and neither did a breakdown in morale leading to calls for a negotiated peace.
